Глагол различать может переводиться английскими discern, distinguish и discriminate. Discern – наиболее общее слово; взаимозаменяется с глаголом distinguish в значении 'распознавать с помощью зрения или слуха': to discern objects at twilight и to distinguish objects at twilight; to discern the whistle of a distant train и to distinguish the whistle of a distant train. Discern и distinguish также могут взаимозаменяться в значении 'выделить предмет из числа других по внешним характерным признакам, отличить': to discern (to distinguish) real pearls from imitation pearls. Discern взаимозаменяется с discriminate в значении 'составить суждение или сделать умозаключение в отношении реально существующих (часто внутренних) различий между предметами или явлениями': to discriminate between good and bad и to discern between good and bad.
